Rustic Modern Ranch would be the perfect theme for this project, I decided as I observed the water-wise landscape enveloping the Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport upon my arrival. With the Phoenix region’s intense arid climate, conserving water was a significant priority for my client. We accomplished this by removing a large patch of turf grass, transforming the sizeable area into more naturally beautiful and inviting living spaces, embellished by native Sonoran Desert planting. Inspired by the looming hills and mountains neighboring the property, I integrated organic curves to mounded planting areas edged by Corten steel and stone-filled gabions as retaining walls.

Connecting the home and its inhabitants to the natural environment was a top priority for this design. From the Bocce Ball court, the campsite-style fire pit area, to the cozy cabana living room – complete with a TV, drink cooler, full outdoor kitchen and dining area – every space offers an opportunity to relax into, and escape from, the harsh surrounding desertscape.
